For a weekend or several weeks, Ile d’Oleron is large and varied, here are some suggestions to help you plan your holiday. A travel guide for a peaceful break in an unspoilt setting…

1. A bike ride to Gatseau beach in Saint-Trojan

An unspoilt natural setting. The bike ride will take you through moorlands and pine woods to a beach bordered by dense forest. Ideal for swimming and water activities. And if you don’t feel like cycling or your kids are dragging their feet, you can take the little tourist train instead.

2. Stunning views from Chassiron lighthouse

The tip of Chassiron with its pretty striped lighthouse, its white cliffs and its turbulent waters is well worth the detour. And what better way to appreciate the view than to climb up to the top! Some 224 steps later, you will feel like you have reached the end of the world with breathtaking views right out over the Ocean.

3. The pretty huts of Château d’Oléron

A picture postcard setting! Blues, greens, yellows, pinks… Go on a gentle stroll to admire the little huts of Château d’Oléron and take some photos. The local artists and craftsmen bring the site to life every summer. The ideal place to find some beautiful holiday souvenirs.

4. Eat ice creams at La Cotinière harbour

Tuck into some colourful, home-made ice-creams by the harbor while you watch the boats come and go and the fishermen bringing in their catch. You will lose all notion of time… change of scenery guaranteed!

5. Take a sailing lesson

Many clubs offer lessons suitable for all levels. Windsurfing, catamaraning, sailing… It’s the perfect opportunity to give it a try!

6. Eat local and do the markets

Savour a dozen Marennes Oleron oysters with a glass of the island’s white wine at the harbor… Enjoy a craft beer from Fort Boyard at aperitif time on the beach… Visit the salt marshes at the saltworks harbor… here, we love good food and local produce. What better way to enjoy your holidays!

And to sleep?
